Back in 1994, we started out as a small sound & lighting store in Northern Minnesota. Six years later, we introduced the NorthernLightFX name and launched our web-site. Now in 2009, we are taking the next step… launching this blog and re-introducing ourselves to you as NLfx Professional!
Northern Exposure?
Many have asked: “Why the name change to NLfx?” Well, quite simply, it’s because our customers and our reputation now extend far beyond just Northern Minnesota. Over the past 15 years, we have grown from that small store into a national retail and wholesale provider of over 70 brands of sound & lighting products. We are proud to be the supplier of many of the top Disc Jockeys, Bands, Photographers, and Universities in the nation. Additionally, we provide advanced contracting & install services to many Nightclubs, Houses of Worship, Military Bases, Schools, Bowling Centers, Skating Rinks, Fitness Centers, and Sporting Facilities throughout the country.
Blogrolling Along…
The other big question is: “Why a Blog?” Well, we really enjoy meeting many of our customers at trade shows & special events. Unfortunately, it is impossible for us to get the chance to meet all of you. Through this blog you’ll have a great way to get to know us better. We believe strongly in “Minnesota Nice”, and we’d like to show you what that means.
NLfx has always been a strong advocate of industry education & training. We’ve supported it through our own ProAcademy, and by sponsoring industry events like Mobile Beat, & DJ Idea Sharing. Many of our staff work, or have worked, in the industry as sound technicians, lighting designers, DJs, musicians, stage hands, etc. Well, blogs are also a great way to educate and communicate. So this is our chance to assist you better by sharing our knowledge and experience with you in a fun & entertaining way. (It also allows us to have an excuse to play with and report on a lot of cool gear & amazing toys!)
If you’re already one of our valued customers, we thank you. If not, we’d like to welcome you. Either way, we would love to get to know you. As much as it’s important for us to provide education and for you to get to know us, it is of the utmost importance that we get to know you! Let me be the first to say congrats on the blog. Welcome to Web 2.0. I am sure that this is going to become a very useful resource much the way the ProAcademy has. Ben, Thank you for coming out to do that DMX training for us. You are the man! Also, thank you for your continued support of the DJ industry (Mobile Beat, DJ Idea Sharing, PodcastForDJs et al).

This is such an awesome blog and great idea. The one thing I’ve always loved about NLFX is you don’t just sell DJ products but you help us long after the sales is over. This blog is just another way to show this industry that you are here not just to sell to us but to grow with us. I’m so impressed with your knowledgeable staff who is all ways available to us, the customer. It could be midnight here in New England and I’ll always find one of you hanging around somewhere ready to help or just talk. You can’t find that kind of service at those centers who also sells drums and guitars.
Now what can I buy next?
Thanks Ron! We’re just passionate about what we do. I think we’re just lucky that we could end up in jobs where we get to talk to like-minded friends like yourselves. It’s a great feeling to help solve a problem or fulfill a need. I love hearing stories from customers about how the gear has improved their shows, etc.
